Union beats Delta State 2-1 in men’s soccer

Delta State University’s men’s soccer team lost to Union University 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at Delta Field.

Union (2-4-0, 1-1-0 Gulf South Conference) scored twice in the first half. Decker Burns opened the scoring in the 24th minute with an assist from Solomon Pela. Ashanie Kennedy added another goal in the 33rd minute, assisted by Freddie Westfall, giving the Bulldogs a two-goal lead at halftime.

Delta State (2-3-1, 0-1-0 GSC) responded early in the second half. Ivan Gomez scored his first goal of the season in the 55th minute, off an assist from Sioni Benham, to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Statesmen pressed for an equalizer throughout the remainder of the match but were unable to find the net. They finished with a 16-7 shot advantage and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Six of their shots were on target.

Union goalkeeper Patrick Schott made five saves to preserve the Bulldogs’ victory, while Daniel Santema recorded one save for Delta State.

Gomez’s goal marked his first of the season. Delta State will next host UAH on Saturday at approximately 3:30 p.m. at Delta Field in Gulf South Conference play.
