UAH edges Delta State 1-0 in defensive Gulf South Conference clash

Delta State men’s soccer lost a 1-0 Gulf South Conference game against unbeaten Alabama Huntsville on Saturday at Delta Field.

The Chargers scored in the sixth minute, with Stellios Starakis finishing a feed from Wesley Atoyebi inside the box. The early goal held up as UAH’s defense limited the Statesmen’s chances throughout most of the match.

UAH controlled possession for much of the first half, holding a 4-1 shot advantage. Delta State increased its offensive pressure after halftime, outshooting UAH 5-4 in the second half and earning three corner kicks.

Callum Black narrowly missed in the 57th minute, pushing his shot wide, while Matthew Nicklas forced a save from UAH goalkeeper Sonny Wright in the 62nd minute. The Statesmen mounted a late surge, with Sioni Benham and Logan Funk each forcing saves in the final minute, but Wright preserved the shutout.

Delta State goalkeeper Daniel Santema finished with two saves, while Wright recorded three for UAH. The match was physical, with 16 fouls in the first half and six yellow cards issued. Delta State played the final 39 minutes down a man after a red card at the 51st minute.

The loss drops Delta State to 2-5-1 overall and 0-2-0 in league play. UAH improves to 5-0-1 and 2-0-1 in the Gulf South Conference. The Statesmen return to action Wednesday at West Alabama as conference play continues.
