Delta State Women’s Soccer Ties Eckerd 0-0 in Defensive Battle

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Delta State University women’s soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw against Eckerd College on Saturday morning at Johnson Field. The Lady Statesmen (1-0-1) relied on a strong defensive effort throughout the match, anchored by goalkeeper Piper Burgess.

Burgess, a sophomore, recorded 11 saves in 90 minutes, pushing her into fourth place on Delta State’s all-time saves list with her fifth career save. Her performance kept the score level despite an aggressive Eckerd attack that outshot Delta State 22-7 and placed 11 shots on target.

The goalkeeper was particularly effective in the first half, making eight saves to keep the match scoreless at halftime. In the second half, Delta State gained more offensive rhythm, with five shots and forcing Eckerd goalkeeper Madi Winn into two saves. Janya Gonzalez and Mariela Dolan each registered shots on goal for the Lady Statesmen.

Despite several late opportunities from both sides, neither team could find the net. The result marked Delta State’s first draw of the 2026 season. The Lady Statesmen will continue non-conference play next week with a road match against McKendree University’s Bearcats in Illinois.
