Southwest Lady Bears Volleyball defeats Gulf Coast in home opener

Southwest Volleyball secured a 3-1 win over Gulf Coast in its season home opener Friday night, according to team reports. The Lady Bears jumped to an 8-2 lead in the first set and went on to win 25-19.

Gulf Coast responded by taking the second set 25-14. In a close third set, Southwest overcame a late rally from the Bulldogs to win 28-26 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was tightly contested, with both teams staying within one point most of the way. Gulf Coast reached set point first, but Southwest responded to tie it and force overtime. The Lady Bears ultimately closed out the match with a 28-26 win in the final set, earning their first victory of the season after starting 0-3 on the road.

Offensively, Addie Raye Pennington led Southwest with 46 assists. Lillian Daviss had 17 kills, while Ina Smith and Tierra Martin each contributed 11 kills. Caroline East led the team with 28 digs.

The Lady Bears return home Monday, August 31, to face Pearl River.
