Southern Miss Sweeps Texas State with 10th-Inning Wild Pitch
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The University of Southern Mississippi baseball team defeated Texas State 5-4 in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park, completing a sweep of the Sun Belt Conference series.
Pinch runner Ty Long scored the winning run on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning. The game was tied at 4-4 when Drey Barrett drew a walk to open the frame. Long was then inserted as a pinch runner. After a flyout and a single by Tucker Stockman, the winning run scored on a pitch that bounced in the turf and eluded the catcher, Clayton Namken, allowing Long to come home.
The Golden Eagles (28-12, 11-7 Sun Belt) secured their fifth walk-off victory of the season and the 38th since 2017. It was their first extra-inning game since defeating South Alabama 8-7 in 12 innings on March 29, 2025.
Matthew Russo’s solo home run in the eighth gave Southern Miss a 4-3 lead, but Texas State responded in the ninth on a double by Dawson Park that scored Ethan Farris, tying the game at 4-4. The Bobcats’ reliever Alizaeh Gutierrez took the loss, falling to 2-1 after allowing the game-winning run in the 10th.
Starting pitcher Camden Clark made his first start of the year, limiting Texas State to two runs over 4 2/3 innings. The Golden Eagles’ bullpen combined to strike out 17 batters, a season high. Reliever Thomas Crabtree earned his first win of the season, improving to 1-2.
Southern Miss will host Tulane on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for its final home non-conference game of the regular season.
