Hinds Football Defeats Holmes Despite Storm Delays, 21-7
RAYMOND, Miss. — Hinds Community College’s football team edged Holmes Community College 21-7 Thursday night at Gene Murphy Field at Joe Renfroe Stadium. The game was delayed by lightning and played in muddy conditions, according to school officials.
Jarred Loper scored the Eagles’ first touchdown late in the first quarter, just before the weather delay. After a scoreless second quarter, Hinds took control in the third. Quarterback Jamarcus Pittman threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Braishun Forbes with 12:36 remaining in the quarter to give Hinds a 14-7 lead.
The Eagles extended their advantage when Makari Bodiford scored on a four-yard run with 2:33 left in the third quarter. Braylen Spann’s extra point made it 21-7, which was the final score. Hinds’ defense held Holmes scoreless in the second half and forced a key fumble recovery late in the game.
Pittman completed 12 of 20 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 26 yards on nine carries. C.J. Martin led Hinds on the ground with 39 yards on eight carries. Kelton Young added 17 yards on three carries, and DJ Miller ran for 14 yards on four attempts.
Young led receivers with four catches, while Kiandre Terry caught three passes for 65 yards. Forbes had one reception for 40 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Floyd Harris led the team with seven tackles, followed by Andre Jackson Jr. with six and Jordan Randle with five. Zedric Washington recorded four tackles, including a sack and two tackles for loss. Sacks by Teborse Coleman and Dayne Robichaux also helped stifle Holmes’ offense.
Hinds finished with 277 total yards, including 121 rushing yards and 156 passing yards. The team controlled the clock for nearly 35 minutes and converted four of 16 third-down attempts. The Eagles will open conference play September 17 against Southwest Mississippi in Summit, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
