Southern Miss’s Drey Barrett Named Sun Belt Player of the Week
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss sophomore third baseman Drey Barrett (Holtville, Alabama) received the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honor Monday, according to league officials.
In three games last week, Barrett hit .556 (5-for-9) with a double, two home runs, and seven RBIs. He posted a .667 on-base percentage and a 1.333 slugging percentage as the Golden Eagles swept Georgia Southern to clinch the Sun Belt Conference regular-season title.
In the series opener, Barrett went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs, including a two-run homer. He added a double and an RBI in the second game and homered again in the finale, driving in two runs. Barrett has now hit safely in seven consecutive games, raising his season batting average to .294 and his current hitting streak to 11-for-25 (.440).
This marks Barrett’s first weekly honor in his career. It is the third Sun Belt Player of the Week accolade for Southern Miss this season. The Golden Eagles will open the Sun Belt Tournament Wednesday at DABOS Park in Montgomery, Alabama, facing either Old Dominion, Georgia State, or Marshall at 4 p.m., according to team officials.
