Southern Miss Softball Adds Megan Griffith as Assistant Coach
The University of Southern Mississippi has announced the addition of Megan Griffith as an assistant softball coach for the upcoming season. Head coach Natalie Poole made the announcement, highlighting Griffith’s extensive coaching background and Division I experience.
Griffith joins the Golden Eagles after serving as the head coach at Morehead State for four seasons. During her tenure, the Eagles posted their second-highest batting average in 11 years and set a school record with most home runs in nine years. The team also improved offensively across multiple categories, including triples, runs, hits, walks, and RBI, according to school records.
Poole praised Griffith, saying, “She brings Division I head coaching experience and extensive knowledge of our sport. She will oversee infield development and assist in various other areas. She is here to help us continue to elevate our program.”
Griffith played college softball at Middle Tennessee State and has coaching experience at UC San Diego, George Mason, and Savannah State. She inherited the Savannah State program just one week before the 2022 season and led the team to its second-ever conference tournament appearance. Her team set a school record for stolen bases and hit the second-most home runs in program history.
At George Mason, Griffith served as an assistant coach for two seasons, helping the Patriots achieve their first winning season since 2014. Her coaching contributed to top-20 national rankings in batting average and stolen bases, along with record-setting fielding percentage and season-ending batting average. She also helped improve GMU’s RPI and contributed to recruiting efforts, signing the nation’s No. 66-ranked class.
Her full-time coaching career began at UC San Diego, where she was an assistant during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Her teams won a conference title, the NCAA West Regional, and advanced to the Division II NCAA Championship. She improved the Tritons’ batting average and helped develop All-American players, while her staff recorded program milestones including the first no-hitter.
As a player, Griffith started at McNeese State before transferring to Gulf Coast State College, where she led her team in multiple offensive categories. She finished her playing career at Middle Tennessee State. The Tennessee native was a three-time Big 8 Conference Player of the Year in high school and earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science from MTSU in 2016. She is expected to complete her master’s in sport management at George Mason in August.
