Southern Miss Men’s Tennis Faces Troy in Sun Belt Tournament Quarterfinals
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss will compete in the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Tennis Championships on Friday in Rome, Georgia. The Golden Eagles, seeded seventh, face second-seeded Troy at the Rome Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Central Time.
Southern Miss enters the postseason with an 8-11 overall record and a 1-4 mark in conference play. The team closed the regular season with a 4-0 victory at Nicholls and showed resilience in the latter part of the season, especially in singles matches. Multiple straight-set wins helped build momentum heading into the tournament, according to school sources.
The Sun Belt Championships will take place over three days. The quarterfinals are Friday, semifinals on Saturday, and the championship match is Sunday. The Golden Eagles will need to perform well in a short span to advance through the bracket. If they win Friday, they will face the victor of the match between Georgia Southern and James Madison in Saturday’s semifinals.
Southern Miss will be represented by players including Eric Perkowski, Saheb Sodhi, Olle Noltorp, Ritabrata Sarkar, Jose Murariu, Rasmus Becker, Matei Varbanciu, Kale Mize, Julius Bult, and Jay Temming. Head coach Zubin Engineer leads the team into postseason play. The team’s depth across singles and doubles has been a key factor throughout the season, and experience in tight matches is expected to be crucial in the tournament setting.
Postseason success could extend the Golden Eagles’ season, with hopes of making a deep run in the Sun Belt bracket. The team’s focus is now on winning multiple matches in a condensed timeframe and advancing to the semifinals, where they could face stronger competition. The tournament continues through Sunday, with the championship match scheduled for that day.
