Southern Miss Men’s Golf Finishes Third at Sun Belt Championship
Madison, Miss. — The University of Southern Mississippi men’s golf team finished third at the Sun Belt Conference Championship at Annandale Golf Club. The Golden Eagles advanced to match play after finishing the three-round stroke play portion in third place.
In the morning’s match play, Southern Miss was defeated by No. 45 Arkansas State, 3.5-1.5. Jake Moffitt secured a half-point in his match against Jack Wallis, with both players trading scores through the back nine and remaining tied after 19 holes.
Supakorn Amornchaichan earned a commanding win over Cole Kirby, 4 & 3, after building an early lead with three birdies over seven holes. Amornchaichan maintained his advantage with two more birdies on the back nine, clinching the match on the 15th hole.
Matthew Javier lost his match to Thomas Schmidt, 5 & 4, while Milan Reed defeated Walker Wise, 3 & 2. Jake Lile finished ahead of Benjamin Fernandez, 3 & 2, to help Arkansas State secure the overall victory. The Red Wolves also claimed victories in other matches, sealing the 3.5-1.5 team win.
Southern Miss’s third-place finish was enough to edge out South Alabama, which finished fourth. The Golden Eagles’ performance included a win and a tie in match play, solidifying their spot in the standings.
