Mississippi State Faces No. 4 Texas in Top-10 Baseball Series in Austin

Mississippi State is set to face No. 4 Texas in a key Southeastern Conference baseball series this weekend in Austin. The matchup is a top-10 showdown that could influence postseason seeding for both teams, according to sources.

The Bulldogs, ranked 10th nationally, enter the series with a 35-10 record and a nine-game winning streak after sweeping South Carolina and LSU, along with victories over Memphis and Ole Miss. Texas holds a 33-9 record and is 13-7 in SEC play. The series begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, with games Saturday and Sunday scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. Both Saturday’s game and the finale will be streamed on SEC Network+ and ESPN, respectively.

Mississippi State has rebounded from back-to-back SEC series losses to Georgia and Tennessee by sweeping South Carolina and LSU for the first time in program history. The Bulldogs also defeated Ole Miss at Trustmark Park. They are two games behind Georgia in the SEC standings and a half-game behind Texas heading into the weekend, according to team sources.

Texas, under second-year coach Jim Schlossnagle, is known for its balanced team with a top-three RPI. The Longhorns have a .299 team batting average, 79 doubles, and 70 home runs. They also excel in stolen bases, having gone 79-for-89 this season. Mississippi State counters with a powerful offense, batting .314 with a .537 slugging percentage, 107 doubles, and 76 homers.

Key players include first-team All-American Ace Reese, who is batting .318 with 15 home runs and 54 RBIs. Reese led MSU with three homers in its sweep of LSU. Noah Sullivan is hitting .345 with eight homers, and Bryce Chance sports a .354 average with exceptional contact skills. Freshman Jacob Parker has emerged as a significant bat, hitting .333 with eight homers and 34 RBIs, including a game-tying grand slam against LSU.

The pitching matchup on Friday features MSU’s Tomas Valincius, who is 7-1 with a 2.13 ERA, against Texas’s Dylan Volantis, who is 6-0 with a 2.06 ERA. Both teams have strong bullpens, and the overall pitching numbers are closely matched, according to team statistics.

Historically, Texas leads the all-time series 9-7 and has won the last three meetings after sweeping State last season. Mississippi State’s last victory over Texas was in Omaha in 2021, during the Bulldogs’ national championship run. The series could influence SEC standings and postseason positioning, but neither team’s fate hinges solely on this weekend’s results, sources said.

Mississippi State’s upcoming schedule also includes games against Auburn and Texas A&M. Texas remains in the SEC title hunt and aims to defend its home turf in this critical series. The Bulldogs have shown they can win away from home, posting an 8-3 record on the road this season.
