Southern Miss Football Completes First Preseason Scrimmage of Fall Camp
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss football held its first preseason scrimmage of fall camp Saturday, with coach Blake Anderson expressing optimism after reviewing video of the session. Anderson said the scrimmage provided valuable teaching moments and noted the team’s effort despite high temperatures.
“There was good on both sides and plenty to teach from,” Anderson said. “It was a great scrimmage in that it gave us solid video to learn from. I was pleased that, despite the heat, no one complained and effort was strong. We got tired late, but we kept chasing and working. That willingness to work is key for us to improve.”
Quarterback Ethan Hampton, who is competing for the starting spot, left the scrimmage after the first series with a hand contusion. Anderson reported that Hampton’s hand was structurally fine and that he was able to throw 20-25 yards on Tuesday. “His hand is fine structurally; he’s dealing with soreness and swelling, but he should be ready by Saturday for the second scrimmage,” Anderson said.
The Golden Eagles are scheduled to return to practice Wednesday for their 12th session of fall camp. They open the 2026 season Saturday, Sept. 5, at home against Alcorn State at 4 p.m. Tickets for the opener, as well as other home games, are available online at SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
