Southern Miss Baseball Edges Tulane 5-4 on Morrison Walk-Off Single

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Kyle Morrison singled on a 2-2 pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving No. 18 Southern Miss a 5-4 victory over Tulane Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park. The Golden Eagles improved to 29-12 with their fourth straight win and their eighth consecutive win over the Green Wave, who fell to 21-21.

Southern Miss took an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Seth Smith singled and scored when Joey Urban homered over the left field wall, his 10th of the season. The Eagles added two more home runs in the game — Drey Barrett’s solo shots in the second and fourth innings — to take a 4-3 lead.

Tulane responded with a four-hit rally in the second, tying the game at 3-3. James Agabedis drove in two runs with a single, and Tye Wood added an RBI double. Barrett’s second homer put Southern Miss ahead again in the fourth, but Tulane tied it in the ninth with a homer from Agabedis.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ty Long drew a walk, and Seth Smith doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Joey Urban was intentionally walked to load the bases. Morrison then delivered the game-winning bloop single into right field off reliever Tom Vincent, who took the loss and fell to 1-2. Colby Allen earned the win, improving to 4-1, after pitching the final 1 1/3 innings scoreless.

Southern Miss’s pitching staff kept Tulane’s offense in check after the second inning. Kros Sivley threw 5 1/3 scoreless frames, allowing just one walk and striking out three. Thomas Crabtree finished the game, working around a leadoff double in the eighth and a homer in the ninth.

The Golden Eagles will next face South Alabama in a three-game series starting Friday at Eddie Stanky Field in Mobile, Alabama.
