Southern Miss baseball ends non-conference play at Tulane Tuesday

The University of Southern Mississippi baseball team visits Tulane on Tuesday for its last non-conference game of the regular season. The contest is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans.

Southern Miss (31-12) is ranked as high as No. 12 in both the D1Baseball.com and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls. The Golden Eagles recently won their second straight Sun Belt series, taking two of three at South Alabama. They won the first two games before losing the finale, snapping a six-game winning streak, according to team officials.

The Green Wave (22-23) lost two of three games at home over the weekend to UTSA. In the last meeting between the two teams, Southern Miss edged Tulane 5-4 last Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park. Kyle Morrison’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Golden Eagles to the victory, marking their eighth consecutive win over Tulane and their second walk-off victory of the season, team representatives said.

Four Golden Eagles are hitting over .300 ahead of Tuesday’s game. Morrison leads with a .333 batting average, followed by Davis Gillespie at .323. Gillespie also shares the team lead with Morrison in home runs at 12 and has a team-best 39 RBIs. Seth Smith is batting .322, while Joey Urban is hitting .314.

Redshirt sophomore pitcher McCarty English (1-1, 4.63 ERA) is expected to make his first start since March 22 against Troy. After Tuesday, Southern Miss will return home to face ULM in a weekend series beginning Friday at 6 p.m., according to team officials.
