Tulane edges Southern Miss 7-6 in late rally in New Orleans

Tulane University rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat No. 12 Southern Miss 7-6 Tuesday night at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans.

Johnny Elliott’s single scored Tanner Chun, who had reached on a walk, giving the Green Wave the lead. Tulane’s victory snapped Southern Miss’s eight-game winning streak and handed the Golden Eagles their second straight loss. Southern Miss, with a 31-14 record, had previously lost to South Alabama earlier in the week.

Southern Miss opened the scoring with a solo home run from Joey Urban in the first inning. The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the second, including a two-run double from Ben Higdon, and extended their lead to 5-0 with two additional runs in the third. Kyle Morrison hit his 13th home run of the season to start the scoring for Southern Miss in the third.

Tulane responded with four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Matthias Haas’s two-run single. The Green Wave tied the game in the seventh on a home run from Trent Liolios. Haas added his second home run of the game in the same inning, bringing Tulane within one run.

The game remained tied until Chun’s decisive single in the eighth. Sam Larson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for Tulane to earn the win, improving to 2-2. Teague Broadhead took the loss for Southern Miss, falling to 0-1 after allowing the winning run.

Southern Miss returns to action Friday with a Sun Belt Conference series against ULM at Pete Taylor Park in Mobile, Alabama.
