Northwest Mississippi’s Meg Daves Aims for Calm at NJCAA DII Women’s Tennis Tournament
SUMTER, S.C. — Meg Daves, a sophomore at Northwest Mississippi Community College, is preparing for her final appearance at the NJCAA Division II Women’s Tennis National Tournament. The tournament is set to take place at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
Daves, who is seeded fourth in Flight 4 singles and sixth in doubles with partner Ángela Ortiz-Sánchez, aims to stay calm after feeling nervous last year. Her opening singles match is scheduled for Sunday at 1:15 p.m., with doubles play beginning at 4 p.m., according to tournament schedules.
This year marks Daves’ second season with the Rangers. She made history last fall when she won Northwest Mississippi’s first ITA JUCO Women’s Regional title in the B draw. Her journey to tennis began in seventh grade, sparked by a suggestion from her father after playing on a Wii. Daves quickly developed a passion for the sport, balancing it alongside cheer and basketball in high school.
Her dedication paid off when, as a senior, she won the state singles title. During her recruitment to Northwest, Daves cited the friendly staff and quality facilities as key reasons for choosing the college. Although her original coach has left, Daves remains grateful for the influence of coaches and staff during her development.
Reflecting on her experience, Daves said she plans to approach this year’s tournament with more confidence. “Just not be nervous because last year I was nervous looking at the brackets, looking up the players I was going to play,” she said. “This year, I’m more calm. I’m just ready to play.”
