Northwest Mississippi Women’s Tennis Advances in NJCAA DII Tournament
SUMTER, S.C. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s tennis team won two matches on the second day of the NJCAA Division II Women’s Tennis National Tournament at the Palmetto Tennis Center, according to team officials.
Head coach Ryan Mounce said the team faced a tough day on the courts but managed to secure important points. “Today was a tough day on the courts. When you reach the final eight at the national tournament, you have to expect that,” he said. “We pulled out a huge win in the main draw from Meg Daves, and Angela Ortiz managed a win in the back draw to gain valuable points. We look to continue climbing in the points race tomorrow.”
The team’s first victory came from Meg Daves in the Flight 4 singles quarterfinals. The sophomore from Northwest Mississippi made a comeback after losing the first set 2-6. She won the second set in a 7-1 tiebreak and carried the momentum into the third, ultimately winning the match.
“After losing the first set, I knew I had to remain calm, not get intimidated, and play my game,” Daves said. “A negative attitude is going to bring a negative mindset, but I didn’t do it alone. I knew I had my team, family, and the other Mississippi JUCO school rooting for me as well.”
Another victory came from Ángela Ortiz-Sánchez in the consolation draw quarterfinals. She defeated her opponent 8-1 and finished her match quickly. Other members of the NWCC team competed but did not secure wins on this day.
Daves is scheduled to play in the Flight 4 semifinal at 10 a.m. CT tomorrow at the Palmetto Tennis Center, while Ortiz-Sánchez will compete in the Flight 1 consolation semifinal at noon. Fans can follow NWCC women’s tennis updates on the team’s social media or at nwccrangers.com.
Results from the tournament include Daves’s match victory, as well as other singles and doubles results from May 4, highlighting the team’s ongoing efforts in the national competition.
