NWCC Women’s Tennis Concludes Season with Consolation Title at NJCAA Nationals
SUMTER, S.C. — Ángela Ortiz-Sánchez earned the Flight 1 Consolation Draw Championship at the NJCAA Division II Women’s Tennis National Championship held at Palmetto Tennis Center. The Northwest Mississippi Community College player defeated Sharon Calderon of Jacksonville State 8-3 in the consolation final, capping an impressive season for the team, according to head coach Ryan Mounce.
Ortiz-Sánchez, a freshman, also won her semifinal match earlier in the day, dominating with an 8-3 victory. In the final, she trailed 2-0 but rallied to win the next two games, then engaged in a tightly contested battle that saw multiple lead changes and breaks of serve.
“At the beginning of the match I felt a little uncomfortable, but in the end, I was able to play my game and win,” Ortiz-Sánchez said. Her teammates cheered from the sidelines, offering encouragement and support throughout the match, which helped propel her to victory, Mounce said.
In singles action, sophomore Meg Daves also competed, winning her first two games against Jones College but ultimately falling in straight sets to the MACCC and Region 23 champion. Despite the loss, Daves played well, making multiple games competitive, according to reports.
The team’s season concluded with the championship, and the players are expected to return for next year’s campaign. Fans can follow the NWCC women’s tennis team updates on social media or at nwccrangers.com.
