WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Mississippi State women’s golf finished third at the Boilermaker Classic, hosted by Purdue, in their season opener. The Bulldogs climbed one spot in the final round of play Tuesday, according to the tournament results.
Avery Weed recorded her seventh top-five career finish, tying for fifth place at 1-under par. She moved up from sixth place after a 74 (+2) in the second round to shoot 71 (-1) in the final round. Weed was one of only seven golfers to finish under par in the event.
Freshman Alicia Bellendir impressed in her collegiate debut, finishing just outside the top 10 at 3-over par. She opened with a 3-under 69 in the first round, struggled with a double bogey in the third round, but recovered with four birdies across seven holes to card a 73 (+1) for the final round.
Samantha Whateley also contributed for the Bulldogs, shooting her first par or better round of the tournament. She finished even par with two birdies and has now recorded 27 career rounds of par or better. Mississippi State completed the tournament with a team score of 290 (-2) in the final round.
The Bulldogs will return to competition September 18 at the Mason Rudolph Championship, where Whateley won her first individual title last season. The Boilermaker Classic was won by Miami, which finished at 10-under par.
