Mississippi State secures first road win at UAB with 2-1 victory
Mississippi State soccer team earned its first road win of the season Sunday night with a 2-1 victory at UAB in Birmingham. The Bulldogs now hold a 2-0 record, according to team sources.
Senior Hailey Johnson scored the opening goal in the seventh minute, fighting through a slide tackle to score off the inside of the left post. Ashley Tutas added a second goal for MSU in the 26th minute on a header from a corner kick, marking her first career game-winning goal and her first goal since last season.
MSU controlled much of the first half, taking six corners and outshooting UAB 3-0 on goal. The Bulldogs led 2-0 at halftime. UAB responded in the second half, scoring in the 63rd minute after a failed clearance kept the ball inside State’s box. The Blazers pressed for an equalizer but were denied in the final moments when goalkeeper Jenny Harrison made a crucial save on a free kick.
The win is Mississippi State’s first in Birmingham since 1997 and ends a four-match losing streak to UAB. It also marks the first time since 1998 that MSU scored against UAB. The Bulldogs have now led for 168 minutes of their season, remaining undefeated in 2026.
MSU returns home for a six-match homestand beginning Thursday against Arkansas State, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. on SEC Network+. More information on the team can be found on their official social media accounts.
