Mississippi College Women Reach GSC Tennis Final; Men Fall in Semifinals
The Mississippi College women’s tennis team moved to the Gulf South Conference final with a 4-0 victory over Valdosta State on Friday at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center. The top-seeded Choctaws improved to 23-0 this season and will face their opponent in Saturday’s championship match.
Mississippi College secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Emily Buchanan and Ann Cabot Stockett, ranked nationally, won 6-3, while Katharina Weber and Molly Bennett matched that score to clinch the point. In singles, Rocio Martinez won in straight sets at No. 2, and Emily Buchanan won at No. 1, 6-0, 6-3. Ann Cabot Stockett completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6. Matches at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 singles were unfinished.
The women’s team will compete for the GSC title Saturday at 2 p.m. CT in Tuscaloosa.
On the men’s side, the No. 5 seed Choctaws saw their postseason run end with a 4-2 loss to top-seeded West Florida in the semifinals. West Florida took the doubles point with wins at No. 1, but Mississippi College responded with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
In singles, West Florida secured four courts to clinch the match. Mississippi College’s points came from Matias Ruiz at No. 3 and Simon Pfau at No. 2. The team concludes its season with a 16-7 record and awaits postseason selection for the NCAA South Regional.
