Mississippi College Tennis Sweeps Opening Round at GSC Championship
The Mississippi College men’s tennis team defeated Auburn Montgomery 4-1 Thursday at the Gulf South Conference Championship in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Choctaws, seeded fifth with a 17-6 record, secured the doubles point and took three singles matches to advance to the semifinals.
In doubles, Sergio Ramirez Ocana and Mattia Ricci won 6-1 at No. 2, while Matias Ruiz and Charles Lefort claimed a 6-4 victory at No. 3. In singles, Simon Pfau earned a straight-sets win at No. 2, and Mikayel Avanesyan completed the comeback with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4, clinching the match. The Choctaws will face top-seeded West Florida in the semifinals Friday at 10 a.m. CT.
Meanwhile, the Mississippi College women’s tennis team remained undefeated this season with a 4-0 victory over No. 8 seed Montevallo. The top-seeded Lady Choctaws improved to 22-0, securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Emily Buchanan and Ann Cabot Stockett, ranked No. 3 nationally, won 6-2, while Katharina Weber and Molly Bennett matched that score.
In singles, Ann Cabot Stockett dominated 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6, and Rocio Martinez added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2. Emily Buchanan sealed the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1. Matches at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 were unfinished. The Lady Choctaws will face either Valdosta State or Lee in the semifinals Friday at 2 p.m. CT in Tuscaloosa.
Both teams will continue their pursuit of a Gulf South Conference title Friday, with the men opening semifinals in the morning and the women competing in the afternoon.
