Belhaven Softball Sweeps Asbury in Doubleheader

The Belhaven softball team swept Asbury in a doubleheader Thursday at Jim McLeod Field in Jackson, Mississippi. The Blazers won the first game 8-2 and the second game 9-0 in five innings.

In the opener, Belhaven overcame an early deficit. Asbury took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after a triple and sacrifice bunt. The Eagles added another run in the second on a bunt and error to go up 2-0. The Blazers responded in the third with a two-run home run by Guy, tying the game. Ellie Williamson and Liberty Gillihan drove in runs later in the inning to give Belhaven a 4-2 lead.

Macy Funderburk entered in the second inning and pitched six scoreless innings, striking out nine. She helped limit Asbury’s offense after a rocky start. Belhaven extended its lead in the fourth with a two-run single from Kaleigh Steverson and a sacrifice fly from Williamson. Langston added an RBI single in the fifth to finalize the 8-2 score.

The second game saw Belhaven jump ahead early with a five-run second inning. Lauren Dunbar’s sacrifice fly and Lily Wainwright’s RBI single put the Blazers in front. Guy’s three-run double pushed the lead to 5-0. The Blazers added four more runs in the fourth, capitalizing on an error and timely hitting. Langston, Guy, and Williamson each contributed RBI doubles to extend the lead to 9-0.

AR Sharp pitched 3.1 scoreless innings to start the game, with the bullpen finishing the shutout. Belhaven limited Asbury to three hits and stranded multiple runners throughout both games. The Blazers will close their regular season Friday with a home doubleheader against LaGrange for Senior Day, beginning at noon.
