Alabama State Sweeps Mississippi Valley State in Final doubleheader of 2026 season
Montgomery, Alabama — Mississippi Valley State University’s softball team wrapped up its 2026 season with a doubleheader sweep by Alabama State on Friday at the Barbara Williams Complex. The Hornets won both games by scores of 9-1 and 8-0.
The Diamond Devils dropped Game 1 in six innings, with Alabama State taking a 9-1 victory. In Game 2, the Hornets completed the sweep with an 8-0 win in five innings. Mississippi Valley State’s record falls to 1-37 overall and 0-23 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while Alabama State improves to 21-30 and 14-9 in conference.
In the first game, Michelle Diaz led Mississippi Valley State with three hits, including the team’s only RBI on a fourth-inning single. Taniya Partee and Devyn Dotson each went 2-for-3, and Kelsey Kaluna-Thomas reached base more than once through a single and a walk. Ashtyn Clark was the only player to record an extra-base hit, a double, and was the only Devil to cross home plate.
During the second game, Clark achieved a double-double with a double and a walk. Diaz contributed with a single and a walk, while Sheridan Kynard added a hit and a stolen base. The team’s season concludes Saturday at 3 p.m. in Montgomery, with Mississippi Valley State seeking its first win of the series.
The Hornets hold a 76-46 all-time series lead over the Diamond Devils, with Alabama State winning 37.7% of the meetings. The teams last faced off on April 9, 2022, when Mississippi Valley State won 4-3.
