Millsaps Alum Lorenzo Bailey Named Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Scholastic Coach of the Year
Atlanta — Millsaps College men’s basketball alumnus Lorenzo Bailey has been named the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Scholastic Coach of the Year, the organization announced Aug. 15. The award recognizes his dedication to developing student-athletes through education and service, according to the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA.
Bailey, who graduated in 2008 with a psychology degree, was nominated by the Atlanta Hawks and was one of five finalists nationwide. The honor was presented during a celebration at Elite Scholars Academy in Jonesboro, Georgia, where more than 600 students, staff, and faculty gathered. Hawks alumni Salim Stoudamire and members of the Hawks Entertainment team presented Bailey with a plaque and trophy, and he received a $1,000 grant as a finalist. Additionally, Bailey will receive a $2,000 grant and coaching resources to support youth programs at the school.
“To be selected as the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Scholastic Coach of the Year is a tremendous honor,” Bailey said. “This award reflects the support of my students, families, colleagues, and community. I thank the Atlanta Hawks and Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA for recognizing coaches committed to empowering young people through sport.”
Bailey’s athletic career at Millsaps included 1,207 points, 350 rebounds, 224 assists, and 166 steals. He helped lead the 2007-08 team to the NCAA Elite Eight with a program-best 28-4 record.
The award, presented in partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance, honors coaches who exemplify integrity, promote character development, and create positive experiences that extend beyond athletics. Each year, the organization selects one Scholastic Coach and one Community Coach of the Year following a rigorous process that includes public voting, interviews, and panel review.
Jon Babul, vice president of basketball programs for the Atlanta Hawks, praised Bailey’s impact. “Lorenzo’s influence shows what one coach can do to foster growth in young people. For nearly two decades, he has used his platform to create meaningful opportunities and help student-athletes reach their potential,” Babul said. “We are proud to see him earn this national recognition.”
Bailey’s work extends beyond the classroom and gym. He has taught English and basketball through Mission First in Africa, supported mental health initiatives, provided free haircuts for those in need, and mentored young men through the Changing Boys into Men program. His ongoing service emphasizes creating lasting, positive experiences for youth and communities.
The Atlanta Hawks, based in Atlanta since 1968, focus on community engagement and youth programs, including efforts to fight food insecurity and promote civic participation. The organization’s membership and other details are available at hawks.com.
