Two Millsaps Students Honored as National Leaders by Omicron Delta Kappa

Jackson, Mississippi — Two students from Millsaps College have earned prestigious national leadership honors from Omicron Delta Kappa, one of the nation’s oldest and most selective leadership honor societies. Elyse Warren and Olivia Danos are among only six undergraduates nationwide to receive the awards each year, and both are from Millsaps.

Warren, a senior from Memphis, Tennessee, was named the Gen. Russell E. Dougherty National Leader of the Year, the society’s highest undergraduate honor. Danos, a senior from Houston, Texas, received the National Leader of the Year in Athletics award. Both students serve as officers of Millsaps’ Omicron Delta Kappa chapter, with Warren as president and Danos as secretary.

It is uncommon for two students from the same college to earn the honor in the same year, according to Megan James, vice president of student life and dean of students at Millsaps and an ODK advisor. James said the awards recognize achievement and leadership that positively influence campus and community life. “Elyse and Olivia exemplify how Millsaps prepares students to lead with purpose, integrity and impact,” she said.

Founded in 1926, the Pi Circle at Millsaps celebrates 100 years of leadership, service and influence on campus. The Gen. Russell E. Dougherty award honors the top undergraduate leader nationally, recognizing those who hold multiple leadership roles and create lasting change.

Danos expressed gratitude for her recognition, citing her campus involvement, including volleyball and other leadership roles. “Being part of the Millsaps community taught me the importance of leading with integrity, resilience and service,” she said. “I’m thankful for the mentors, teammates and friends who helped me grow.”

Warren highlighted her diverse leadership experiences, including athletics, academics, research and service. “The leadership experiences at Millsaps have profoundly transformed my life and those around me,” she said. “Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world,” she added, quoting Nelson Mandela.

Both awards include financial prizes and recognize sustained excellence in leadership, service and character. The honors emphasize Millsaps College’s commitment to developing students equipped to lead beyond graduation through faculty mentorship, campus involvement and a values-centered education.
