Mississippi State’s Marcus Williams Praises Defense After Dominant Season Opener

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State safety Marcus Williams described the Bulldogs’ defense as the most enjoyable he’s experienced in college football after their 62-13 victory over ULM last Saturday.

Williams, a transfer from Rice, tallied five tackles in his first game at Davis Wade Stadium, where he said the atmosphere was unlike anything he’s encountered before. “It was crazy,” he said, adding that he had told teammates before the game that the environment was intense, and they told him to wait until kickoff.

The Bulldogs’ defense limited ULM to a single touchdown, recorded two sacks, and six tackles for loss in the dominant performance. Williams highlighted the importance of the start, noting the team’s goals for improvement heading into their next game against Minnesota.

Williams, a Hoover, Alabama native, has shown resilience throughout his college career. He began at Rice, playing 12 games with 22 tackles in 2022, but injuries sidelined him in 2023 and 2024. He returned to become a full-time starter in 2025, posting career highs with 67 tackles and five pass breakups.

Now in the Southeastern Conference, Williams is eager to continue his development and enjoys playing in defensive coordinator Zach Arnett’s scheme. “It’s the most fun defense I’ve ever been a part of,” Williams said. “He does so many different things up front and on the back end. You never get bored.”

Heading into Saturday’s game at Minnesota, Williams emphasized the importance of preparation and playing with effort. Despite the road challenge, he remains confident in the team’s readiness. “When we go out there, we’re not worried. We just do what we do,” he said.

Mississippi State will then face South Carolina on Sept. 19, but Williams said the Bulldogs are focused on the upcoming game, regardless of venue. “We’re already prepared; we just go out there and perform,” he added.
