Jones College sweeps Northeast Mississippi with season highs in hits and runs
BOONEVILLE — No. 6 Jones College swept No. 20 Northeast Mississippi Community College in a doubleheader Sunday at The Plex. The Bobcats won 10-6 and 19-9, improving to 41-8 overall and 20-4 in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference.
Jones secured the first game with a six-run sixth inning after Northeast briefly took the lead. The Bobcats opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI-double from Mabry Eason and an RBI-single from Mary Kimble Price. Jones led 3-0 after two innings, but Northeast responded with RBIs from Adin Shelton and Leah Walker to cut the deficit to 3-2. Shelton’s solo homer in the fourth tied the game at 4, and Northeast took the lead in the fifth with a pair of solo homers from Chloe Skelton and Shelton. Jones regained the lead in the sixth with a five-hit, four-unearned-run rally, highlighted by RBIs from Annaston Tate, Addy Shorter, and Chloe Jenkins. The Bobcats added a run in the seventh, while Morgan Landry earned the win in relief. Sophie Gant took the loss for Northeast. Jones finished with 13 hits; Northeast had 11 with five errors. Claire Andersen became the school’s all-time stolen base leader with 86 after drawing a walk and stealing two bases.
The nightcap saw the Bobcats produce a season-high 25 hits and score in five innings. Jones jumped out to an early lead with RBIs from Tate and Shorter, but Northeast responded and gained a 5-3 lead by the fourth, thanks to Gant’s three-run homer. Jones then scored six runs in the fifth, led by Eason’s game-tying home run, and took control with a five-run sixth inning featuring RBI-doubles from Shorter and Little and a two-run single from Price. Northeast scored three in the bottom half but couldn’t catch up. The Bobcats sealed the win with another five-run frame in the seventh, with key RBIs from Madison Sawyer, Andersen, Eason, and Tate. Eason led with four RBIs, while Little went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Breelyn Cain earned the win, and Abigail Lindsey secured the save.
