JACKSON, Miss. — Jackson State University’s women’s soccer team defeated visiting Delta State University 5-1 on Monday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Complex.
Jackson State dominated early, scoring twice in the first 18 minutes to lead 2-0 at halftime. The Tigers added three more goals in the second half to extend their advantage.
Despite the score, Delta State showed resilience in the second half. The Lady Statesmen generated 12 of their 13 shots after halftime and maintained pressure in the attacking third. Caroline Chandler scored her second goal of the season in the 80th minute to avoid a shutout.
In goal, Piper Burgess made seven saves in the first half, while Kim Bircher added five stops in relief. Delta State finished with 12 saves on the day. Jackson State outshot the Lady Statesmen 29-13 overall and held a 17-6 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams had seven corner kicks.
Delta State will look to rebound next Saturday when it travels to Valdosta for its conference opener against the Blazers at 1 p.m.
