The Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s soccer team improved to 3-0 with two wins against top-10 teams at the St. Louis Showcase held at Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex in St. Louis, Missouri, according to school officials.
In their first match, Northwest defeated No. 8 Iowa Lakes Community College 3-1. The Rangers dominated the first half, recording 22 shots and allowing none from the Lakers. Olivia Miller scored the opening goal in the 12th minute, assisted by Yazzlyn Alex. Alex added two more goals in the 16th and 27th minutes, while Miller assisted on one of Alex’s goals. After halftime, Iowa Lakes scored off a cross in the 47th minute, but Northwest’s defense held firm, allowing only two shots in the game.
The second game saw Northwest beat No. 10 Rock Valley College 6-0. The Rangers struggled to convert chances early, with only one shot on goal in the first half. Rylee Ringold scored the only first-half goal in the 41st minute. In the second half, Northwest’s offense exploded, with Mary Logan Clark scoring twice, in the 52nd and 62nd minutes. Alex added her third goal in the 58th minute, and Kassidy McMillian scored from 15 yards out in the 60th minute. Ringle added her second goal in the 80th minute, completing the scoring. The team’s defense recorded only 10 shots against and earned a shutout.
Head coach James Beattie praised his team’s second-half performance against Rock Valley, noting the team’s ability to capitalize on chances. “There were some harsh words at halftime,” Beattie said. “The reality is that we had the same chances in the first and second halves; we just converted in the second.” The team’s next game will be an exhibition against Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee.
