Florida Southern tops Delta State 3-0 in men’s soccer home opener
Delta State University’s men’s soccer team dropped its home opener to Florida Southern College 3-0 Friday afternoon at Delta Field.
Florida Southern (3-0-0) scored twice in the first 17 minutes. Ollie Stephens found the net in the 11th minute, and Hector Oliver added another goal in the 17th minute to give the Moccasins a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The Statesmen (1-2-1) responded in the second half, generating seven shots and applying pressure in the attacking third. Junior Villalba Martinez led Delta State with three shots, including two on goal.
Goalkeeper Daniel Santema made nine saves for Delta State, which was outshot 21-8 overall. Oliver scored his second goal of the match on a penalty in the 83rd minute, sealing the victory for Florida Southern.
Delta State returns to non-conference play Sunday at 11 a.m., facing Eckerd College.
