Belhaven Men’s Soccer Earns 2-2 Draw in Season Opener

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Belhaven men’s soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against United States Sports University in Tuesday’s season opener, according to school officials.

USSU scored twice in a span of 62 seconds early in the match. Nathan Webb put the Eagles ahead in the sixth minute, assisted by Camrin Pearson, before setting up Keandre Hernandez at 7:42 for the second goal. Belhaven responded with a goal from Mauro Hernandez at 27:46, assisted by CJ Koppeis, to trim the deficit to 2-1.

Belhaven dominated the second half, outshooting USSU 11-1 and controlling much of the play. Diego Sarzalejo tested the goalkeeper early in the half, and Mauro Hernandez along with Ricardo Flores created several chances, with Flores eventually scoring the equalizer in the 75th minute. Flores finished with five shots, the most on the team, and added two more attempts in the final eight minutes.

The Blazers maintained pressure late, with shots from Adrian Sanchez, Tyler Milioto and Graham Harris. USSU’s only second-half shot came in the 85th minute and sailed high. Belhaven finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots and held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks, officials added.

Charlton McMorris played all 90 minutes in goal for Belhaven, making one save. The team now stands at 0-0-1, while USSU is 0-1-1. Belhaven is scheduled to play next Saturday against Emory in Atlanta, with kickoff set for 6 p.m., officials said.
