Delta State weighs options for football after GSC competition ends
Delta State is exploring new conference and scheduling arrangements for its football program as the Gulf South Conference prepares to end football competition after the 2026 season.
The university held an informational forum Friday to discuss possible paths forward, including scheduling alliances, affiliate conference membership and full conference membership. Delta State Athletics said it is weighing the financial effects of longer travel and the added resources needed to maintain a competitive schedule.
Delta State, West Alabama and Valdosta State are the GSC’s only football-playing members for the 2026 season, according to the university. Valdosta State has announced plans to join the Peach Belt Conference in 2027. The university said the 2026 season will be the final year of official GSC football competition and championships under the current structure.
Starting in 2027, the three programs are expected to compete as football independents because the GSC will no longer sponsor the sport. Delta State said finding future opponents and managing travel costs will be among the challenges as conference affiliations change.
The forum gave supporters an opportunity to ask questions and hear about the university’s review of options. Delta State said it is prioritizing the football program’s long-term success and financial sustainability. A recording of the forum is available online.
