W Volleyball Player Avery Watts Named to NCAA Division III SAAC Committee

Indianapolis, Ind. — Avery Watts, a volleyball player at The W, has been named to the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, representing the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the school announced Monday.

Watts, a sophomore middle hitter and the campus SAAC president, will serve on the committee through Jan. 20, 2029, according to the school. The committee is composed of 43 student-athletes from across the country who serve as the voice for their peers within NCAA Division III. They help shape legislation, engage with NCAA leadership and participate in governance processes, the school said.

“We are extremely proud of Avery to have earned this position,” said Buddy Foster, The W’s director of athletics. “This speaks volumes about her as a leader and her ability to get things accomplished. It is a tremendous acknowledgment of what we have accomplished in The W Athletics, even in a short time as an NCAA III member, to have one of our student-athletes chosen to represent the interests and needs of peers at the national level.”

Watts, a second-season player, also competes as an outside hitter for the Owls. She transferred from Russellville High School, where she played volleyball, basketball and track and field. Head coach Breylee Linder, who is also a campus SAAC coordinator, praised Watts for her leadership.

“Avery has proven to be a strong advocate for student-athletes and a true embodiment of the Division III model,” Linder said. “She consistently represents our institution with character and professionalism. I am excited to see her impact at the national level through NCAA Division III SAAC.”

As a member of the national committee, Watts will participate in meetings throughout the year to discuss legislation, current issues, and other topics with NCAA leaders, the Sport Science Institute, and the Board of Governors. She will also serve on various subcommittees, provide student-athlete perspectives, and foster education efforts.

“Receiving the SLIAC national rep appointment is a massive honor,” Watts said. “To be chosen to represent my campus and conference means the world to me. I hope this opportunity encourages other student-athletes to get involved in leadership and share their experiences.”

Watts’ leadership has also contributed to The W’s community involvement efforts, including volunteer initiatives and overseeing the annual Owl Athletics Hoo’s Who Awards Ceremony. Her goal for the upcoming year is to increase student-athlete engagement and strengthen ties with the local community, she said.
