Texas Southern beats Jackson State 8-7 in SWAC baseball tournament
Texas Southern defeated Jackson State 8-7 on Thursday at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Ala., to advance in the SWAC Baseball Championships. The Tigers rallied in the final innings to overcome a late Jackson State lead.
Jackson State’s Shemar Harris went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Tyree Reed finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs, and a walk. Talmadge Davis started for Jackson State, allowing three runs on two hits over five innings before giving way to relievers Trae Burton and Derek Arrocha.
Jackson State took an early lead with a run in the first inning and extended it to 7-1 after five innings. However, Texas Southern stormed back in the sixth, scoring five runs on three hits, including a three-RBI triple by Shaun Williams. Williams added another RBI single in the ninth, sealing the Tigers’ victory.
The Tigers’ late rally included a home run by Anthony Ruiz in the eighth and a game-tying single by Shaun Williams in the ninth. Christopher Chavez then delivered the game-winning RBI single, giving Texas Southern the win. Arrocha earned his 7th win of the season in relief.
Jackson State’s season ends with the loss, while Texas Southern advances in the tournament, according to the school’s athletics department.
