Jackson State clinches SWAC tournament spot with win over Mississippi Valley State
Jackson State earned a spot in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Championships with an 11-5 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Friday night at Magnolia Field. The Tigers improved to 23-23 overall and 13-12 in conference play with five regular-season games remaining.
Pierre Cabral led Jackson State at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs. He hit a two-run home run in the third inning that tied the game at 3-all. Cabral also added an RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the fourth. Tyree Reed finished 2-for-3 with two walks and four runs scored. Robert Tate Jr. contributed two RBIs with a double in the eighth inning that helped extend the lead.
Starting pitcher Talmadge Davis worked three innings before being relieved by Trae Burton, who earned the win. Burton allowed one run on three hits over three innings, striking out four. Jaedeyn Edwards recorded the save, striking out two in the seventh and eighth innings.
The game saw early offense from both sides, with Jackson State taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Mississippi Valley State responded with three runs in the bottom of the first. The Tigers took control with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by Cabral’s home run and Tate’s two RBIs. Jackson State maintained its lead through the final innings to secure the win.
The teams will continue their series Saturday with a game scheduled for 6 p.m. at Magnolia Field.
