Prairie View Dominates Alcorn 11-1 in SWAC Baseball Opener
Prairie View A&M opened its Southwestern Athletic Conference series with an 11-1 victory over Alcorn State on Friday night at Willie E. ‘Rat’ McGowan Stadium. Isaac Herrera pitched six scoreless innings, scattering five hits and striking out seven, to earn the win, according to the school.
Jordan Williams led the Prairie View offense with a 3-for-4 performance and drove in three runs. Hunter Ham added a home run and two RBIs, while Ethan Walker stole three bases and reached base multiple times. Prairie View’s offense totaled 12 hits and drew six walks against Alcorn’s pitching staff.
The Panthers broke open the game in the fourth inning, taking a 6-0 lead. Ham hit a solo home run to start the scoring rally. Jordan Williams and Basilio Williams followed with singles, and Ethan Walker added an RBI single. A sacrifice fly from Tyvon Moore extended the lead to four runs. Prairie View then added five more runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Jordan Williams and a wild-pitch chaos that brought in three runs.
Alcorn State scored its only run in the seventh inning when Kanious Davis singled home Jamir Hollway. Davis finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. The Braves threatened again in the fifth but were unable to capitalize, leaving the bases loaded after a rally of three singles.
The Prairie View pitching staff limited the Braves to just six hits and struck out seven. Alcorn’s bullpen struggled, with relievers surrendering multiple walks and wild pitches. Prairie View improved to 11-36 overall and 7-18 in SWAC play, while Alcorn fell to 9-39 and 3-22 in conference action. The teams will meet again Saturday at 3 p.m. CDT for the second game of the series.
