Jackson State’s Reed, Cabral, Lopez, Davis, and Jarome honored by Black College Nines

Eleven historically Black colleges and universities are represented on Black College Nines’ 2026 Large School Elites, which highlights top NCAA Division I players and coaches. The selections are based on statistics, research, and input from coaching staff and sports information departments, according to Black College Nines.

Jackson State University had four players chosen for the two teams, along with its sports information director earning Coach of the Year honors. Tyree Reed, a redshirt junior outfielder, was the only first-team selection. He hit .401 with 75 hits and 25 extra-base hits, including nine home runs, and drove in 41 RBIs. Reed also scored 63 runs, stole 10 bases, and posted a slugging percentage of .642 and on-base percentage of .538, with 48 walks and 12 hit-by-pitches, according to the publication.

In conference play, Reed hit .400 with 44 hits, including eight doubles, one triple, and eight home runs. He scored 47 runs and had 26 RBIs. Reed also achieved a conference-best three home runs in a single game against Florida A&M.

Pierre Cabral was named to the second team after hitting .320 with 66 hits and 27 extra-base hits, including 19 doubles and eight home runs. He finished with 53 RBIs, 52 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases. Cabral posted a .529 slugging percentage and a .420 on-base percentage, drawing 28 walks and being hit 11 times. During conference play, he hit .318 with 12 doubles and six home runs, scoring 32 runs and knocking in 35 RBIs.

Jayden Lopez and Talmadge Davis also made the second team as pitchers. Lopez, a senior, posted a 6-4 record with a 5.98 ERA, striking out 93 batters over 84.1 innings. Davis, a sophomore, finished 2-2 with a 4.64 ERA in 22 appearances, including 10 starts, with 74 strikeouts over 54.1 innings.

Travis Jarome was named the Sports Information Director of the Year. He played a key role in promoting the MLB HBCU Power Series at Trustmark Park and helped produce and broadcast 20 games for SWAC TV. Jarome also provided instant replay for all home games, according to the publication.
