Southern Surges Past Mississippi Valley State in Late-Inning Rally
ITTA BENA, Miss. — The Mississippi Valley State University baseball team led most of Saturday’s game against Southern but faltered in the late innings. The Jaguars scored ten runs over the final three innings to rally past the Green and White, 12-8, at Magnolia Field.
Southern’s offense ignited in the second inning, chasing Valley State starter Logan Darnell after just five outs. The Jaguars capitalized, pushing across five runs in that frame. Despite Valley State’s efforts to hold on, Southern’s offense continued to produce in the later innings.
Mississippi Valley State, now 11-31 overall and 7-17 in the SWAC, led for most of the game. The Jaguars improved to 24-21 overall and 17-7 in conference play. Saturday’s game marked the sixth consecutive win for Southern in the series, which dates back to 2012, with the Jaguars leading 6-0 all-time.
Valley State’s Logan Darnell pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts. Stephen Landaz went 1-for-2 with three RBIs, and Tanner Aoki reached safely three times, scoring twice and stealing two bases. Eric Williams drew two walks, including one with the bases loaded to drive in a run. Cody Leming and Israel Ramos also contributed offensively, with Leming crossing the plate twice and Ramos doubling home a teammate.
