Southern Miss women’s soccer falls to Mississippi State 4-0 on the road

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Southern Miss women’s soccer lost 4-0 to Mississippi State Sunday at the MSU Soccer Complex in a non-conference road game, according to the university’s athletics department.

Mississippi State controlled much of the game, scoring twice in the first half. Laila Murillo put the Bulldogs ahead at the 18-minute mark, and Kati Anne Shepherd added a goal just before halftime at 44 minutes, assisted by Elsa Johnson.

Southern Miss made adjustments during halftime and played a more competitive second half. Logan McGruder, the Golden Eagles’ goalkeeper, played all 90 minutes and made several saves to keep the team in the game. Despite their efforts, Mississippi State extended its lead with goals from Shepherd at 66 minutes and Murillo again at 71 minutes.

Southern Miss coach Todd Owens’ team created scoring opportunities early, with Ava Bynes generating chances in the attacking third. The Golden Eagles are using these non-conference games to build resilience ahead of their home schedule.

The loss represents the team’s second consecutive defeat. Southern Miss will host Southeastern on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex in Hattiesburg. Admission is free. The team will look to refocus and improve before their next match.
