ULM Overcomes Jackson State in Second Half for 5-1 Win

MONROE, La. — Jackson State’s women’s soccer team took an early lead but couldn’t maintain its advantage, falling to ULM 5-1 at Brown Stadium Sunday.

The Tigers scored first in the 27th minute, with Ryanne Hawthorn-Harper putting Jackson State ahead 1-0. The team’s defense also held strong in the first half, with goalkeeper Kianah Farmer making two saves, including stops on shots from ULM’s Angela Moreno and Ines De Lope Casanova.

In the second half, ULM responded quickly. Beth Strutton scored in the 49th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The Warhawks then took control, scoring three goals in a span of just over 12 minutes, including two by Jade Bowé.

Jackson State pressed offensively late in the match. Hawthorn-Harper tested ULM goalkeeper Jen Handy in the 77th minute, and Kaila Tablado and Mariah Burnett also fired shots on goal. Handy finished with six saves, while Farmer made five for the Tigers on 18 ULM shots. Late goals from Amy Sharkey, including a penalty kick in the 83rd minute, sealed the victory for ULM.

Jackson State head coach Ted Flogaites acknowledged the team’s strong first-half performance but said the second half was disappointing. “We were really excellent for 45 minutes and then we weren’t. I felt like we quit after the equalizer,” he said. “That’s an issue and it’s on me to solve.”

The Tigers will look to carry their early momentum into their next game, traveling to Fayetteville to face Arkansas on Friday, September 4, at 1 p.m.
