Southern Miss women’s soccer routs Southern 8-0 in Owens’s first home game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss women’s soccer defeated Southern 8-0 Sunday at the Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex. The victory was the Golden Eagles’ most lopsided win of the season and the first home win for head coach Danny Owens.

Southern Miss dominated the match from the start, controlling possession and creating numerous scoring chances. Ryan Smith opened the scoring in the 13th minute, assisted by Lorilee Taylor. Taylor then scored herself at the 22nd minute. Shaelynn Quick added a goal just before halftime, and Oliwia Loeman converted a penalty kick to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead at the break.

The second half saw continued offensive pressure. Olivia Tribolet scored in the 46th minute, assisted by Ava Bynes. An own goal by Southern in the 60th minute extended the lead to 6-0. Alessia Navarro scored in the 74th minute, assisted by Zara Werema, and Loeman added her second goal in the 82nd minute to cap the scoring.

Owens expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance. “We played good today and it’s good to get that result,” he said. “It’s a great building piece to what we are doing here. I’m really proud of the ladies.”

Southern Miss outshot Southern 27-5, with 16 shots on goal. The team’s offensive output matched its season high, and six different players scored. Logan McGruder started in goal and posted a clean sheet before being replaced by Jenni Dähne in the second half.
