HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss women’s soccer defeated Louisiana Tech 2-1 on Sunday at the Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex. The Golden Eagles improved to 5-3-2 overall and 2-1 in Sun Belt Conference play with their second straight league victory, their first home conference win under Coach Danny Owens, according to school officials.
Shaelynn Quick scored in each half to lead Southern Miss. Her first goal came in the 10th minute, assisted by Argentina Estrada, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. Quick added her second in the 54th minute, creating her own chance and finishing for her fourth goal of the season, tying her with teammate Ava Bynes for the team lead.
Louisiana Tech pulled a goal back in the 87th minute through Caroline Martin, but Southern Miss held on for the win. The Golden Eagles outshot the Bulldogs 20-15 and had 10 shots on goal, both season highs in Sun Belt play since their conference affiliation began, according to school officials.
Southern Miss goalkeeper Logan McGruder made five saves, while Estrada, Georgia Gray, and Ella Jefcoat each played all 90 minutes. Estrada’s assist marked her first point with the team. The Golden Eagles also produced 13 shots in the first half and maintained offensive pressure throughout the match.
With the victory, Southern Miss has won four of its last five matches, a streak not seen since the 2021 season. The team also secured consecutive Sun Belt wins for the first time since October 2024, when they defeated Troy and Louisiana Tech in close succession.
