Jackson State Volleyball Beats Texas Southern 3-1 in SWAC Play

Jackson State University volleyball defeated Texas Southern 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. The Tigers improved to 6-9 overall and 2-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

Jackson State came out strong in the first set, winning 25-18 behind a balanced offensive attack. The team recorded 16 kills on 37 attacks with a .351 hitting percentage. Hope Briggs led the offense with several key kills, while Shelby Zanders and Sophia McKenzie also contributed.

Texas Southern responded in the second set, claiming a 25-16 victory to even the match. The teams fought through a tightly contested third set, with Jackson State ultimately pulling away late. After the score was tied at 21-21, the Tigers scored three of the final four points to win 25-23.

Jackson State carried the momentum into the fourth set, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. The Tigers maintained their advantage until Texas Southern rallied to tie at 17-17. Jackson State responded with critical plays, securing the 25-23 victory and the match win.

Briggs led the Tigers offensively with 14 kills, 16 points, and three blocks. Zanders added six kills, three blocks, and two aces, while Jayla David contributed five kills and three blocks. Mackenzie Moore was efficient with four kills on 12 attacks and one error. Davis directed the offense with 24 assists and added seven kills and eight digs. Naija Gadis also contributed with 16 assists.

Defensively, Giannelle Asomani recorded a match-high 26 digs. Davis and Parker Featherstone each added eight digs. The team totaled 64 digs and eight blocks, consistently responding to Texas Southern’s runs during the match.
