Southern Miss women’s soccer ties Southeastern Louisiana in home opener

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss women’s soccer earned a 2-2 draw against Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday night at the Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex, in the team’s home opener, according to university athletics.

The Golden Eagles, now 1-2-1, responded from two straight road losses with a resilient performance. Ava Bynes opened the scoring for Southern Miss in the 22nd minute, assisted by Ryan Smith. Southeastern Louisiana answered in the 32nd minute with a goal from Kaitlyn Tung, and the teams headed into halftime tied at 1-1.

In the second half, Southeastern Louisiana took the lead when Shae Kuntz scored in the 56th minute, assisted by Charlotte Lewis. Southern Miss mounted a late rally and equalized in the 85th minute when Ryan Smith converted a penalty kick, resulting in the 2-2 final score.

Southern Miss dominated the second half, registering 11 shots and six corner kicks compared to Southeastern Louisiana’s four shots. Logan McGruder made three saves for the Golden Eagles, while Kendall Curran had four saves for the Lions. Bynes and Smith were active throughout the match, with other players creating multiple scoring opportunities.

Following the match, coach Danny Owens expressed satisfaction with the team’s resilience, noting that the effort provided a positive start to the home schedule after road setbacks. The Golden Eagles will continue their home stand with games against Jacksonville State on September 3 and Southern on September 6.
