Southern Miss Beats Texas State 6-3 to Win Series
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Davis Gillespie had two hits and drove in three runs to lead No. 22 Southern Miss to a 6-3 victory over Texas State on Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park. The Golden Eagles improved to 27-12 overall and 10-7 in Sun Belt Conference play with the win, which clinched the series.
Prior to the game, the university honored late coach Pete Taylor with a ceremony and a commemorative bobblehead giveaway. The team responded by collecting 12 hits, including four from Joey Urban, three from Drey Barrett, and two from Gillespie.
Camden Sunstrom earned the win, limiting Texas State to two runs on four hits over a career-high six innings. He also walked three and struck out six. Texas State’s Cade Smith took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits in five innings. Kros Sivley recorded his second save, striking out the final batter in the ninth.
The game saw an early lead for Southern Miss when Gillespie drove in Urban with an infield single in the first inning. Texas State responded with a two-run homer from Jackson Cotton in the second, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. The Golden Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the frame and took the lead for good with a run in the third. Gillespie’s solo homer in the eighth extended the lead, and Tucker Stockman added a two-run shot later in the inning.
Texas State scored a final run in the ninth on a wild pitch, but Sivley closed out the game to secure the series win. Southern Miss will attempt to complete a sweep in Sunday’s noon game at Pete Taylor Park.
