Owls Athletics earns four district honors in CSC writing contest
The University of Mississippi at William’s athletics communications team earned four district awards from the College Sports Communicators (CSC) in its annual Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest, according to a release from the CSC.
All four entries from MUW’s Office of Athletics Communications received recognition in District 6, which includes schools in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The department took home two first-place awards and two second-place awards in the College Division, which covers non-NCAA Division I schools.
The winning entries included a feature story about women’s basketball player Conley Langford titled “Prose and Con,” which was published in Visions magazine and shared on NCAA III social media. The story has been viewed more than 92,000 times. The second top honor was awarded for a recap of Zach Riley’s performance at the 2025 NCAA Division III men’s golf championships. Riley was the first MUW golfer to make the cut at the NCAA III nationals. Both articles are now eligible for national honors, with winners to be announced later this month.
The two runner-up awards recognized a profile of Director of Athletics Buddy Foster called “The Buddy System” and a feature previewing the 1986 volleyball team’s Hall of Fame induction, titled “1986 Volleyball Team Had the Recipe for Success.”
More than 100 articles from CSC members across the country were honored as district winners in the 2025-26 Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest. Nearly 500 articles were submitted from all eight districts across seven categories, highlighting the strength of collegiate sports journalism in the region.
