Ole Miss Freshman Madi George Named Top-10 Finalist for NFCA Rookie Award
Ole Miss softball freshman Madi George has been named a top-10 finalist for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) National Freshman of the Year award, the organization announced Thursday. George becomes only the second Rebel to earn this distinction, joining Hailey Lunderman, who was a finalist in 2016.
The Leander, Texas, native was previously named a top-25 finalist for the award on April 23. Her outstanding freshman season has continued into postseason play, with George posting a .392 batting average, 21 home runs, 58 RBIs, and nine doubles. She boasts a slugging percentage of .837 and has drawn 27 walks, leading her team in multiple categories including home runs, RBIs, doubles, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, walks, and OPS.
George has also made a notable impact in the SEC Tournament, leading the field with four hits and batting .571 with two RBIs during the win over No. 5 Tennessee on Wednesday. Her performance has set single-season records at Ole Miss for home runs, RBIs, and total bases, with her sights on the school’s slugging record. Her efforts have earned her national recognition, including awards from D1Softball, Softball America, and Softball on SI, as well as SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
The finalists for the NFCA Freshman of the Year will be announced on May 20, with the winner revealed on May 26. George and the Rebels will continue SEC Tournament action Thursday, facing No. 6-ranked Texas at 4 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.
