Ole Miss Student Turns Pickup Game Into College Basketball Opportunity

Max Smith, a graduate student at the University of Mississippi, transitioned from recreational pickup games to securing a spot on the Ole Miss men’s basketball roster. Smith, who hails from Austin, Texas, developed a passion for basketball early on but was limited by COVID-19 restrictions and recruiting challenges.

Smith’s love for the game persisted as he played regularly at the South Campus Recreation Center and for his fraternity’s intramural team. His talent caught the attention of Oxford High School basketball coach Drew Tyler, who observed Smith making consistent shots from various distances, including NBA-range threes and half-court shots.

Impressed by his skills and character, Tyler introduced Smith to the Oxford High gym’s shooting machine and recommended him to Ole Miss coaches. Smith then met with head coach Chris Beard, participated in a tryout, and was offered a spot on the team within a week of graduating from Ole Miss with an undergraduate degree.

Smith, who initially planned to pursue a master’s degree at New York University, faced a sudden change in plans. He joined the team just weeks after graduation and began summer workouts. His first game action came on Nov. 3, 2025, during the season opener against Southeastern Louisiana, where he scored his first collegiate points with two free throws.

Despite setbacks like tearing his ACL in October, Smith rehabilitated and returned to play the following season. His journey exemplifies perseverance and determination, with lessons learned from Coach Beard emphasizing hard work and personal development. Smith encourages others to seize opportunities, no matter how unconventional, as his story highlights.
