Mississippi College softball beats Montevallo 4-1 in GSC tournament opener
Oxord, Ala. — Camryn Bailey threw a complete game as Mississippi College opened the Gulf South Conference Softball Championship with a 4-1 win over Montevallo on Thursday at Choccolocco Park.
Bailey allowed one run on eight hits, struck out eight and improved to 16-9 on the season. The Choctaws (30-21-1) scored first in the second inning when Ashlyn Rodgers homered to left field for a 1-0 lead.
Mississippi College added to its lead in the third inning after Mary Lem doubled to left center, advanced on a throwing error and scored Megan Matheis. The team extended its advantage in the fifth when Kate Rills reached on a bunt and scored Blakely Gill.
In the sixth, Matheis delivered an RBI single through the left side, scoring Morgan Lavergne to make it 4-0. Montevallo (39-15) scored in the seventh on Emma Hawkins’ RBI single, but Bailey closed the game to secure the victory.
Gill and Matheis each had three hits, while Fryar added two and Lem drove in a run. Mississippi College will face the winner of the West Florida-Trevecca Nazarene matchup Thursday evening at approximately 6 p.m. at Choccolocco Park.
